Nietzsche believed that once people started to realize that god was dead that civilization as a whole would sink into nihilism as a result of the loss of the Christian values that are tied to that god. Looking around the modern world you see some evidence of that but for the most part that doesn't seem to have happened. What has happened is more in keeping with Freud's ideas that the civilization that has been created out of those values needs them and will not let them go as they are a threat to its own stability and existence. There is a vast section of the population that desperately clings to their Christian god and all the trappings there in. Most of them rather than being true believers are held in by fear, fear to examine their own belief system and balk in the face of herd instincts. The bulk of western civilization may give lip service to god but are still firmly in the grips of the system of values set up by that ideology. Thus Secular Humanism is born. All the values and repression are there but without the faith to back it up, instead herd instincts, an easy life, and fear takes the place of god.

They are the Last Men, they are apathetic creatures, who have no great passions or commitments, who are unable to dream, who merely earn their living and keep warm. What is the average man in America concerned about on a daily basis? Sports scores, lottery numbers, what celebrities are doing, and what ever is going on in the current popular television show. Reality shows are a strange pointer to this last man. He would rather watch strangers piled into a house and live their lives rather than live his own. If they are on TV, then some how their life is more interesting and real than the one you have. It is a symptom of the sickness their world has.

What are Christian and secular humanist virtues? Humility, Charity, Chasity, Compassion i.e. Pity, Poverty, Peace. All slave morality to make them feel better about their situation of weakness. Slave morality springs forth from peoples' uncertainty in themselves and feelings of weakness, oppression and abuse. They believe in Chasity because they are unable to obtain the mate they desire. They believe in fidelity because once they have one they are afraid they will leave them. Peace at all costs because they are afraid to fight. They are afraid of real physical violence. Poverty because they are unable to obtain the things they desire. Humility because they are ashamed at their weakness and must now make that weakness a virtue.

Charity and Compassion are self preserving. Since they place such a high value on poverty, then anytime they obtain any material goods they are unable to enjoy them, and thus must give them away. To account for this it must be a virtue to give it away freely and it has the added value of being able to secretly feel superior yet again over the poor sod they gave it to. Compassion is a safe guard for their own survival, make the strong compassionate and maybe they will not destroy us. Conscience is a word that cowards use to keep the strong in awe.

Enough about them, I have overthrown their snares. I now see that their values have only one purpose, to make me a slave and take away my freedom and liberty, because they are desperately afraid of a free man. What then are my highest values? There is no longer good and evil, there is only harmful and helpful to me. All true values come out of love, love of self, reverence for self, absolute freedom of self. Or as Crowley would say, "Love is the Law, Love under Will" All false values come from fear, the need for approval, and the preservation of the group over the individual. In all matters it must be asked, what am I to gain from this? Will it make me weak or will it make me strong? Selfishness is a virtue, it is the recognition that oneself is the measure of all things.
